Trash Can Pictures, August 22, 1999 Index

These are some pictures of Trash Can after I finished most of the work on the base platform. The motors, batteries, and PC case are mounted. Wires are run for the motors and batteries. The motherboard pictured in these pictures is one that was occupying the case when I grabbed it. It will be evicted in favor of a better one.

Sofar there aren't any controllers or any other sort of electronics mounted or hooked up except for the floppy disk.

The next phase is to mount the desired motherboard, power supply, and other electronics. I still need to settle what H-Bridge setup I'm going to use to drive the motors. The motors are behind the back wall under the disk.

I added two handles for easier lifting and carrying, but I don't know anybody who'd want to carry it for any length. It's already over 80 lbs, and I expect it to top out over 100 lbs when done. For now the handles are almost required for managing moving it around.

The black lining you can see in some of the wood pieces is spalding. It's a very early form of rot that is highly prised for it's effect on the wood's charecter. It isn't advanced enough to significantly effect strength, but really looks pretty. You can see it in the ends of the for aft boards in the shots of the front. It also shows up in some of the side shots. Now, why did I use such valuable wood for my robot base. I had it around, and the pieces used were rejects from some tables I made. They really aren't good examples as the amount of spalding is quite low.

The types of wood present are:
