Trash Can Robot

Notes for a trash can style robot.  The R2D2 body shape has alot going for it from a technical / usefullness standpoint.  Being a short squat body, it's center of gravity is low.  The legs that are attached at the top of the body, combined with the center leg create a good tripod stance that places the center of mass well within it's perimiter.  This makes motion much more stable.  When the legs are moved forward of the center leg it allows the robot to have greater stability when manipulating objects right infront of it.  Though not really shown in the movies, the legs can also be used to walk, thus allowing for clearing of obsticals a standard wheeled robot would otherwise not be able to traverse.
